Mastering Strobes in Large Environments: A Technical Study of the Tokkum Pole Assignment
Light has always shaped our perception of the world, but I’ve been exploring how artificial light can redefine it. My first experiment inside a moulin used strobes under the northern lights to highlight a climber against nature’s power. That experience led me to Tokkum Pole, a 33-meter vertical ice climb, where I pushed lighting further, not just to illuminate but to transform the landscape. Just as snow alters a mountain’s contrast, light has the power to reshape how we see an environment.
Harnessing Light in the Wild: Using a Strobe for Adventure Photography
Breaking free from the ordinary often unlocks new ways to see the world. Read about my first attempt to blend strobes with landscape adventure photography in some of the harshest and most stunning environments.
Photography Amongst Harsh Environments
I recently had the privilege of giving a presentation to the Calgary Camera Club, sharing insights into my work as an adventure photographer. Specializing in capturing the raw beauty of nature and the daring feats of athletes in some of the world's most perilous environments, my presentation delved into the inherent risks, strategies for managing fear, and the unique challenges involved in documenting such captivating environments.
The Booming Ice Chasm
On September 29th 2023, my mountaineering partners Mikey Farmer, Adam Keirle and I explored this 180 meter deep, cold trap cave for 13 hours as we attempted to capture its true beauty before it becomes inaccessible.
The East Coast Trail
Walking 336 km along the coast of Newfoundland, I was forced to push my body and mind past what I previously thought was possible. Being from the rocky mountains, I underestimated the amount of fortitude it would take to complete such a walk.
